Welcome to the Fall 2008 season of Little League American in San Mateo!

On Deck!

Little League has started announcing equipment changes that will impact the Spring 2009 season.

Beginning with the 2009 Little League Baseball season, baseball bats with a diameter of 2 ¾ inches are no longer permitted for use in the Junior League Division of Baseball.

Baseball bats with a 2 ⅝-inch diameter are now the standard for all teenage baseball divisions (Junior, Senior and Big League).

The "minus-3" requirement - overall weight (in ounces) of a bat can be no more than three ounces below the overall length (in inches) of the bat - remains in effect in Senior and Big League Baseball divisions, but is NOT a requirement in Junior Baseball.

Also, in effect for the 2009 season is the requirement that all non-wood bats used in Little League Baseball Divisions and below shall be printed with a BPF (bat performance factor) of 1.15 or less.

Now that registration is open for players, it is also time to sign up for all the other volunteer positions that are needed to make the league a success. Anyone can apply to become a volunteer. Whatever talents or skills you have, we can use them! Across the country, volunteers are grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, retirees, community leaders, former Little Leaguers, friends, neighbors, and more. Any community member who wishes to become a volunteer may apply.

All parents of children involved in Little League Baseball are strongly encouraged to volunteer. As a parent, volunteer, you have the opportunity to spend quality time with your child in a safe, fun-filled environment. Oftentimes, parent and child social lives parallel each other. Volunteering allows your life and your child's life to intersect on common ground, with shared interests and goals.

Parents, take a minute to fill out the volunteer form while registering your child. If you are not a parent and would like to volunteer, please do so. Volunteer forms can be found on our Forms Page. All volunteer paperwork must be submitted on or before Feburary 1, 2009, but the sooner you sign up, the greater impact your help and support will have.

No experience is required to become a volunteer. Most of the volunteer opportunities require little or no training. SMLLA will provide you with any necessary training (as well as support and encouragement), that you will need to be successful. The best volunteers are those who are able to bring added enjoyment to the game simply be being themselves. What you see during a Little League game is a mere fraction of what you can do as a volunteer. You can volunteer to help in virtually any aspect, with such things like:

  • Being a Team Manager or Coach - Being a manager or coach requires time, patience, and a basic knowledge of the game of baseball. You may be required to attend meetings, instructional sessions, or seminars. You will communicate with the parents/guardians of your players to inform them of any schedule changes, rainouts, and Little League events and activities.
  • Helping at Registration - Volunteers may be needed to make and distribute posters and flyers advertising the beginning of registration. You can pass these out to local schools and youth organizations, and distribute them throughout neighborhoods.
  • Being an Umpire - Aside from calling ball or strike, safe or out, umpires are responsible for teaching players good sportsmanship and the rules of the game. Umpires are also called upon to interpret rules and help settle minor disputes that may occur during games.
  • Participating on a Fundraising Committee - We always need help with fundraising. This function is instrumental to help provide such things as uniforms, equipment, awards and team trips/parties.
  • Helping with Field Maintenance - SMLLA is required to maintain the fields that your child plays on. As a part of the field maintenance crew, your skills and abilities may be used to mow grass, line fields, rake dirt, and execute minor repairs on fences, benches and bleachers.

More information about volunteer positions can be found on the "More Info" tab.

Finding parking around Trinta Park could be a little more difficult from now on. Caltrain crews have installed fencing along the right of way just south of the Hayward Park station. This is part of a multi-year project begun last year to fence one side of the entire Caltrain right of way between San Francisco and San Jose to make the tracks safer. It's very dangerous for people to cross anywhere except designated crossings, and the agency is using the fencing to try to prevent people from being on the tracks where they're not supposed to be. Because of this, however, a large section of land just south of our diamonds is no longer available for parking. If you are visiting Trinta Park on a busy day, you may want to allow yourself more time to find parking. Parking may be easiest on 19th Avenue, Palm and Leslie Street or the Hayward Park Caltrain Lot or Pacific Blvd, where you can use the overhead pedestrian walkway, or the walkway through the train station.

Please remember that we are adjacent to a residential area and be mindful of our neighbors. See this picture for more details. The area highlighted in red is no longer available for parking.
